Wood, coal and smokeless fuels

Seasoned Wood

One of the commonest mistakes made by woodstove virgins is to attempt to burn wood which has not been correctly seasoned. Maximum moisture content of logs to be burned should never exceed 18%-20%.

Wet logs do not burn. Any heat from the stove is used in converting the water in the logs to steam and creating byproducts such as creosote. The former lowers the heat output of the appliance, whilst the latter blackens the glass and is likely to cause a chimney fire.

Always insist the supplier guarantees the quality of the logs, and buy a moisture meter to test them!

Coal

Coal is a non sustainable fossil fuel and is suitable only for open fires. For advice on the natural coals available in your area it is best to consult your local reputable coal merchant.

Smokeless Coal

Most smokeless fuels are manufactured for a particular purpose and a list of those suitable for stoves is available from the HETAS website, or consult with your local reputable coal merchant.

BEWARE...only burn fuels recommended by the manufacturer of your appliance. Failure to do so can invalidate warranties and cause damage to stoves and flue systems. Never burn any timber which has been painted or treated with any chemical preservative!
